AUGMENTED REALITY LEARNING LABS
XR EXPERIENCE
Augmented Reality Lessons for Stamford Connecticut Public High School Science Students Developed in collaboration with EdAdvance and CoAction Lab, I am researching and creating 5 lessons for Connecticut public schools using Augmented Reality as a learning aid.
Project Development and Implementation
Development Period: 2020-2021
Completion and Implementation: 2022
AR Lessons Created:
3DNA: An interactive AR lesson focused on the basics of DNA translation.
DNA Translation Basics: A more advanced exploration into the processes of DNA translation.
Natural Selection in the Galapagos Islands: A dynamic AR lesson illustrating the principles of natural selection using the Galapagos Islands as a case study.
Chemical Reactions of Household Chemicals: An engaging AR lesson demonstrating chemical reactions using common household chemicals.
UN Sustainable Goals & Periodic Table Element Properties: A dual-focus lesson that introduces students to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and explores the properties of elements in the periodic table through AR.
Implementation
These lessons were developed to integrate seamlessly into the existing curriculum and were implemented by EdAdvance and Stamford Public Schools in 2022. The AR Learning Labs have been designed to make complex scientific concepts more accessible and engaging, fostering a more interactive and immersive learning environment.
Case Study & Process
PROJECT OVERVIEW
I served as the Creative Director to develop five innovative Augmented Reality (AR) lessons designed for Connecticut Public Schools, in collaboration with EdAdvance, UConn DMD, and CoAction Lab,. The project aimed to leverage Augmented Reality (AR) technology as a learning aid to enhance educational experiences in various scientific and global topics. The Augmented Reality Learning Labs project exemplifies the potential of AR technology in education, providing students with a unique and engaging way to learn complex subjects. By collaborating with educational organizations like EdAdvance and CoAction Lab, we have created tools that not only enhance understanding but also inspire curiosity and a love for learning among students.
INTELLECTUAL IMPACT & MERIT
Intellectual Merit
The Augmented Reality Learning Labs project represents a significant advancement in educational technology, integrating augmented reality (AR) into the curriculum to enhance student engagement and understanding of complex scientific concepts. As Creative Director, I led the development of five AR lessons, including topics such as DNA translation, natural selection, chemical reactions, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These lessons were meticulously researched and designed in collaboration with EdAdvance and CoAction Lab, showcasing the potential of AR as a transformative educational tool. Through a grant from EdAdvance, I researched and developed 3DNA & Translation Basics in a special topics course DMD 3099 Augmented Reality for Learning at UConn DMD in Fall 2020, and hired and managed two internships dedicated to helping produce that final three lessons.
Impact
The implementation of these AR lessons in Connecticut Public Schools, particularly within the Stamford Public Schools system, marks a substantial step forward in modernizing science education. Stamford Public Schools serve approximately 16,000 students, with approximately 2050 students engaged in science education at the high school level. The integration of AR into their curriculum provides these students with interactive and immersive learning experiences that traditional methods cannot offer. EdAdvance, a leading educational service provider in Connecticut, supports numerous school districts and reaches thousands of students and educators annually. By collaborating with EdAdvance, the AR Learning Labs have the potential to impact a wide audience, enhancing the learning experience for many students and providing teachers with innovative tools to improve instruction.
By offering these AR lessons, the project not only enriches the educational landscape for students but also empowers teachers with cutting-edge tools to facilitate learning. The success of this project can serve as a model for other districts looking to incorporate AR technology into their curricula, demonstrating the profound impact that innovative educational strategies can have on student outcomes. Through collaboration with EdAdvance and CoAction Lab, this initiative exemplifies the transformative potential of AR in education, fostering a more interactive and engaging learning environment for future generations.
